It is to know its composition. Thought (fikr) is undoubtedly one of its aspects. It is one of the keys to the unseen (ghayb). However, it is a light (nūr). Where is this radiant nūr that guides the way to obtain that key?
Do not reflect on the heavens and the earth themselves, but on their creation. These meanings are subtle indications that have disappeared within their own concealment. When a person begins to ascend to the forms of thought (fikr) and reaches the sky of this matter, spiritual forms (rūḥānī sūrat) descend into the material world and, without accepting analogy, bring forth hidden things and ascend to the heavens, and though their tongues are different, they converse with the angels of the heavens. (al-Insān 76:24)
Fikr is deep contemplation (taʾammul) upon the verses (āyāt) in order to attain maʿrifa (experiential knowledge of God) of the Lord through them. (Jāmiʿ, 54)
Fikr is divided into three types: The fikr of the common people (ʿawām) is about the blessings of Allah, and from this, maʿrifa arises. The fikr of the elite (khawāṣṣ) is about Allah's promises and rewards, and from this, desire for Allah's reward arises. The fikr of the elect (aḥaṣṣ) is about Allah's threats and punishments, and from this, fear of His punishment arises. (Jāmiʿ, 62)
