it increases, and they become even more self-satisfied; due to istidrāj (gradual enticement leading to heedlessness), they remain in a state of heedlessness, fall into vain hopes, and succumb to delusions. They imagine that the deeds which become manifest are more beloved than those that remain hidden. They do not fear the tribulation and calamity that may arise from (manifest) deeds. Similarly, the situation is the same when they are criticized. When criticized, apart from finding this situation distasteful, there is nothing else.
