Pass beyond the desert of order and arrangement, become enraptured along with those who are enraptured, grasp the essence so that among the mountains and hills, on the mountains of fehm (comprehension) and the hills of salām (peace), you may soar. Then you will see what you are meant to see, and you will become like the sharp sword of Sām extending from the Sacred Mosque (al-Masjid al-Ḥarām). (Tawāsīn, 201)
Fiqh (jurisprudence) and fehm (comprehension) are two synonymous terms. Indeed, the Arabs say faqultu (I understood) in the sense of fahimtu (I comprehended). Allah has bestowed from His presence knowledge and ḥikma (wisdom) (partially) and has elevated comprehension above decrees and rulings. (Kūt, I, 153)
Comprehension returns you to Allah, encourages you towards Him, and leads you to tawakkul (reliance upon God). For comprehension from Allah unveils to you the secret of ʿubūdiyya (servitude) within yourself. (Tanwīr, 5) (see also: fehvāniyya, 241)
