In this regard, they use very vile and explicit expressions. However, righteous individuals avoid these, and convey them and everything related to them only through allusion, symbol, and implication... Here, there are obscene and explicit words whose mention is repugnant. Most of these are used for cursing and reproach. These too differ among themselves, each being more obscene than the other. Most of them vary according to the customs of different countries. The mildest are reprehensible (makrūh), while the gravest are objectionable (maḥẓūr). Those that fall in between occupy various intermediate degrees among them. (Iḥyāʾ, II, 151)
