The huwiyya (the essential selfhood) of the Real (al-Ḥaqq) is the ghayb (unseen, hiddenness) in which manifestation is impossible. However, this is so with respect to the totality of the Names and Attributes. It is as if this points to the inwardness (bāṭin) of wāḥidiyya (the unity of multiplicity). I say 'as if' because huwiyya cannot be restricted exclusively to the Name, Attribute, quality, rank, or to the Absolute Essence (Dhāt) without regard to Names or Attributes. Rather, huwiyya points to all of these both collectively and individually. The state of huwiyya indicates the inward aspects and ghaybūbiyya (hiddenness). 'Huwa' is derived from an expression indicating the unseen. Thus, with respect to Allah, huwiyya, together with the understanding of ghaybūbiyya, points to the Essence (Dhāt) in terms of His Names and Attributes. (Insān, I, 58)
