Hajel refers to the inertia of the nafs (the lower self) due to excessive modesty. However, this ḥāl (spiritual state) is praiseworthy not in men, but in children and women. Nevertheless, a person feels shame before those whom he holds in high esteem in his own eyes. Shame before people occurs as follows: a person sees his own nafs as lower compared to another. As for one who does not feel shame before Allah, it is because he does not know His Majesty. (Mizān, 75)
