If you are in a state with the Real (ḥaqq) in truth, know that this is a state of effacement (maḥw) and fanāʾ (annihilation in God). This state is that of the abdāl (the spiritually substituted ones), the muwaḥḥidīn (those who affirm tawhid [the oneness of God]), the ʿārifīn (those endowed with maʿrifa [gnosis, experiential knowledge of God]), the people of knowledge and intellect, the sādāt-i umarāʾ (the eminent shaykhs), and the ḥufazā-yi halk (those who watch over the people), the ahillā (the noble ones), the aʿyān (the notables), and the aḥibbāʾ (their beloveds). Peace be upon them! To comply with the command regarding this matter is achieved by opposing your nafs (the lower self). You must divest yourself of strength and qudra (power; i.e., any claim to strength and power). You must never have any will or striving in anything related to His dunyā (this world) or ʿuqbā (the next world). Then, you become a servant not of your own dominion, command, or desire, but of Allah, the true Owner. (Futūḥ, 27)
