It is then your separation from this ḥāl (spiritual state). (Iṣṭilāḥ, 534)
According to the (Sufi) community, faṣl (separation) is losing what you hoped for from the Beloved. In our view, faṣl is your separation from the Beloved when He is your eye and your ear. If the separation occurs before this (before the Beloved becomes as your eye and ear), it does not fall under the faṣl mentioned here. What is intended here is the separation that comes after union (wuṣla, attaining the Beloved). This (union) is a tasting (dhawq, spiritual experience). Before this tasting, the thought that hope (rajāʾ, spiritual hope) is incumbent upon the servant arises (that is, it is felt that rajāʾ should precede this state), and this state of rajāʾ yields its place to this occurrence so that this ḥāl may arise suddenly.
Again, this (rajāʾ) is like the faṣls (separations) classified in this context. There is nothing higher than this rajāʾ. Then, from this station, a ḥāl descends that will be realized in the higher and lower worlds through names, attributes, and qualities.
