hürmet (Sufi Terminology)

Hürmet (reverence) is to abstain from opposition and rebellion. Its first subtlety is to show exaltation before commands and prohibitions without harboring thoughts of punishment or reward. For such considerations are among the forms of worshipping the nafs (the lower self). The second subtlety of hürmet is that goodness flows into the outward (zāhir, i.e., external appearance and actions), while also preserving the signs of tawhid (the oneness of God). In such conduct, thoughts that might lead to misguidance do not prevail, nor are there forced attitudes requiring taʾwīl (interpretive justification). The third subtlety is to be protected from laxity in boldness, from joy in excessive security (amn), and from seeing only the apparent causes. (Ravza, 481)
