huwiyyat al-Ḥaqq (Sufism Glossary)

Huwiyyat al-Ḥaqq (the Divine Ipseity) is the unseen (ghayb) whose manifestation is impossible. However, this refers to the totality of the Divine Names and Attributes. It is as if it alludes to the inward aspect (bāṭin) of wāḥidiyya (the station of Divine Oneness). I say "as if" because huwiyyat cannot be restricted exclusively to the Name, Attribute, quality, rank, or to the Absolute Essence (Dhāt) without regard to Names or Attributes. On the contrary, huwiyyat points both to all of these collectively and to each of them individually. The state of huwiyyat indicates the inward realities and the ghaybūbiyya (the state of being hidden) of these realities. The term "huwiyya" is derived from a word (huwa) that denotes the absent (the hidden). Thus, regarding Allah, huwiyyat, together with the understanding of ghaybūbiyya, alludes to the Essence (Dhāt) in terms of His Names and Attributes. (Insān, I, 58)
