and baṣīra -i nāfiza (a penetrating baṣīra [spiritual insight])
There are five conditions; if any of these are found in a person, it is not valid for him to be a shaykh: ignorance regarding religion, considering the prohibitions of Muslims to be permissible, interfering in unnecessary matters, following one's caprice and desire in every affair, and being involved in all kinds of actions contrary to akhlāq (moral character). (Jāmiʿ, 15)
The poor (dervishes) are the truthful ones who will be sought in the presence of Allah, who will circumambulate beneath the Throne of the Most Merciful. The shaykh is responsible for them. Even if only for a moment, they are held accountable for abandoning the dhikr (remembrance of Allah). (Nafahāt, 101)
From the murīd (aspirant, disciple), aptitude; from the shaykh, assistance. (Nafahāt, 130)
For the poor (dervish), there is only his shaykh. He places him before his eyes and looks from there, for the movement of this world (dunyā) and the hereafter is gathered in him. The ṣādiq (truly devoted one) witnesses wondrous (spiritual states). (Nafahāt, 131)
My shaykh is my qalb (the heart), my zawiya (spiritual retreat) is my head. Wherever I go, these two are with me. (Nafahāt, 133)
