The Qutb (spiritual pole) pours the spirit of life into the cosmos from the highest to the lowest. He is, not in his human aspect, but according to the angelic quality that bears the substance of life, upon the heart (qalb) of Isrāfīl. The ruling of Jibrīl in him is like the ruling of the rational soul (nafs-i nāṭiqa) in his primordial human constitution at the source of the attribute of humanity (insāniyya). The ruling of Mikāʾīl in him is like the force of attraction, and the ruling of ʿAzrāʾīl in him is like the force of repulsion... (Jāmiʿ, 4)
The Abdāl are seven, and the Qutb-i Ghawth (the Pole of Succor) is one. When the Qutb-i Ghawth passes away, the seven abdāl gather and select one among themselves as the ghawth. Often, the abdāl avoid undertaking this duty, and instead, they choose a qualified one among the walī (friends of God) as the ghawth. If unity cannot be achieved in the selection of the ghawth, they refer to the Messenger of God (peace be upon him). They come to him and wait in his presence; the Messenger of God selects one among them, who then becomes the Qutb-i Ghawth and is granted the manifestation of the Supreme Name (ism-i aʿẓam). The centers of divine manifestation in beings submit to him, and by the ruling of the Name that manifests in him, he governs in the realm of dominion and malakūt. He becomes the ghawth from whom help is sought by the spirituality of Muhammad. (Nafahāt, 124)
The ḥaqīqa sphere shines with him
He fills all existence with his light
The people of Truth turn in groups towards his presence
To receive the pure light of his thought
A master he is
Those thirsty for guidance draw near to Allah through him
Knowing the gain of goodness as a bounty
Whoever does not dip his hand into the sea of grace
How could he be aware of this virtue?
The Aqṭāb (qutbs), whether in essence or by deputation, are walī (friends of God) who gather within themselves all spiritual states (ḥāl) and stations (maqām). This designation is further broadened so that anyone who possesses a certain station and is the foremost among his contemporaries in that station is called a qutb. Sometimes, a person in a region is called the qutb of that region, and the shaykh of a community is called the qutb of that community. However, the concept of aqṭāb, in the absolute sense, mutlaq quwwa 575
