It cannot be. (Jāmiʿ, 51)
Maʿrifa (gnosis, experiential knowledge of God) is to know Allah by the evidence of His existence, and to know what is permissible and impermissible concerning Him. (Jāmiʿ, 54)
Maʿrifa is of three kinds: the general maʿrifa, which is to know the acts of Allah; the specific maʿrifa, which is to know the attributes of Allah; and the most specific maʿrifa, which is to know the Essence of Allah. The general maʿrifa, which is to know the acts of Allah, is the maqām (spiritual station) of ordinary muʾmin (believers). The specific maʿrifa, which is to know the attributes of Allah, is the maqām of the khawāṣṣ (elite) among the muʾmin. The most specific maʿrifa, which is to know the Essence of Allah, is the maqām of the walī (friend of God), nabī (prophet), and rasūl (messenger). (Jāmiʿ, 62)
In the lexicon, maʿrifa means knowledge. In the terminology of the people of ḥaqīqa (inner reality), it is to act rightly for Allah in one's dealings and in all states, to be in constant munājāt (intimate supplication) inwardly, to turn to Allah in everything, and, in addition to purifying oneself from bad traits and qualities, to know Allah Most High by His names and attributes. In summary, maʿrifa of Allah (maʿrifatullāh) arises to the extent that a person distances himself from his nafs (the lower self).
