The conditions of imāmat (imāmatin şartları, the prerequisites for spiritual leadership), as mentioned by the scholars, are ten in number: six of these are innate and cannot be acquired through effort, while four can be attained through striving. The qualities that must be present from birth are: bāligh (reaching the age of maturity, adulthood), ʿaql (sound intellect), ḥurriya (freedom), being male, being from the Quraysh tribe—though there is disagreement on this point, as some scholars have not considered this last aspect a requirement for imāmat—and having unimpaired faculties of hearing and sight (i.e., not being blind or deaf). The four conditions that can be acquired through effort are: necdet (shajāʿa wa jasāʾa, courage and bravery), ʿilm (knowledge), kifāya (sufficiency, competence), and warāʿ (scrupulousness in avoiding doubtful matters).
