What is kabza? Answer: The Exalted Allah has said: "The whole earth will be within His kabza (grasp/disposal)" (al-Zumar 39:67). Bodies are not subject to spirits, but spirits are subject to bodies. When bodies are seized (kabz), spirits are also seized. For bodies are the forms of spirits. Allah has informed that everything is within His kabza. Every body is a place for its spirit. There is nothing other than spirit and body. However, bodies are divided into two: those composed of elements (such as earth, water, fire, and air) and those composed of light. This is natural. Allah has connected the existence of spirits to the existence of bodies, and the subsistence (baqāʾ) of bodies to the subsistence of spirits. He has seized (kabz) the bodies so that, by necessity of extracting what is within, they may return to Him. For He nourishes it through the body and extracts from it what is within. (Futūḥāt, II, 113)
What is His (Allah's) act concerning kabza with respect to them? The answer is as follows: What they are upon are His acts. He raises, lowers, expands (bast), seizes (kabz), opens, covers, conceals, makes manifest, sets in motion, unites, causes aversion. His general act towards them is to change their states (aḥwāl). For this is an essential act. If He did not change, the ruling of His divinity would not remain. His being God is an essential attribute. Because they are always within kabza, it is absolutely necessary for Him to change His act upon creation. (Futūḥāt, II, 114)
