Kadim (qadīm, the pre-eternal) is that which is prior in terms of existence (wujūd). It is perpetual (dāʾim) and its existence precedes all created beings. This can be none other than Allah the Exalted. (Hujvīrī, 468)
When the signs (ishārat) became manifest, the attributes that were brought into being (i.e., contingent attributes) separated from the Kadim, and dark nafs (nafs, the lower selves) were attained, and He manifested Himself to them. The cosmos found relief by relying upon and being attributed to Him. The Lord who is the All-Hearing (al-Samīʿ), when He affirms that He hears His servant (with the phrase "Samīʿa-llāhu liman ḥamidah"), the obedient servant also praises Him (by saying "Rabbanā wa laka'l-ḥamd"). (Latāʾif, 101)
The incapable (ʿājiz) is neither patient nor anxious. The Qadir (qādir, the powerful one) is the one who, while possessing power, is patient with ease. In times of tribulation, he is patient with anxiety and guards his limbs (i.e., is careful with his actions). He is patient because he has devoted himself to enduring hunger. (Badʾ, 39)
Qadir and kadir is the one who, if he wills, acts, and if he does not will, does not act. (Rawḍa, 312)
