They turn away from their objects of worship and return to Him. Walāya (spiritual friendship with God) also carries the meaning of maḥabba (divine love). As for the word walī (friend of God), it is possible for it to be a word in the faʿīl pattern with the passive participle meaning. (Hujwīrī, 254)
Nubuwwa (prophethood) is the acceptance by the sacred nafs (nafs al-qudsī, the sanctified soul) of the realities of knowledge from the substance of the First Intellect; risāla (messengership) is the conveyance of this information and intelligibles to those who wish to benefit from and accept them. (Risāla, 146)
The other characteristics of nubuwwa are perceived through the spiritual taste (dhawq) that arises from entering the path of Sufism (taṣawwuf). For you have understood this by means of the analogy of sleep. If you did not possess an example of this within yourself, you would not be able to affirm the prophet. If there is a characteristic in the prophet that has no counterpart in you and (for this reason) you can never comprehend, how could you affirm it? Affirmation of something only comes after understanding it. This analogy can be attained at the beginning of the Sufi path. The amount that arises in you from this analogy is proportional to your own capacity.
