They have placed upon themselves the effort to increase taqwa (God-consciousness) and obedience, which will lead to the maqāms (spiritual stations). This effort is for their spiritual journey (sayr sulūk) to be sayr fī-llāh (in God). (Kāshānī, 42; Jāmiʿ, 80)
Those who are cut off from maʿrifa (gnosis, experiential knowledge of God) are cenāʾib. That is, they are those who remain distant from maʿrifa of the Real (al-Ḥaqq). With their intellectual gaze, they infer the cause from the effect, but they are veiled from the reality of knowledge. These are the people of rational contemplation and inference. (Sofyavī, 201)
