The servant, through certain knowledge (yaqīn), ascends to the safāʾ (purity) of the qalb (the heart). The safāʾ of the qalb elevates the servant to the spiritual stations of witnessing (mushāhada) with the eye, such that nothing passes through his qalb except the remembrance of the Real (al-Ḥaqq). If he were to disobey, it would be as if he had disobeyed al-Ḥaqq. Neglecting or abandoning this leads to sorrow (turbidity) arising in the qalb. The sorrow of the qalb means its darkening.
