Kelef refers to an excessive love or passion that its possessor can only endure with difficulty and sabr (patient endurance). The expression keliftu bi hādhā l-amr means "I became passionately attached to this matter." Kellefahu taklīfan means "He imposed upon him something burdensome." Tekalleftu al-shay'a means "I endured a particular thing." Kelef also denotes enduring an affliction that befalls a person. When one is unable to bear something, the phrase Hamaltu al-shay' is used.
