When the Real (Hakk) — Sublime and Exalted is He — wills to remove the veil He has placed over His servant and to show him (the realities) through the eye of the qalb (the heart), He draws him near to Himself. Thus, the intimacy (uns) of nearness to Allah erases from the person's perception those things which cause him pain. If the Real — Sublime and Exalted is He — were to manifest Himself to the people of Hell with His beauty (jamāl) and perfection (kamāl), this manifestation would cause them to lose their sense of suffering. Conversely, if the beauty (jamāl) and perfection (kamāl) of the Real — Sublime is He — were to be hidden from the people of Paradise, the blessings would no longer please them. Punishment is only effective due to the existence of the veil. The various kinds of punishment are but images of the veil. Blessings, on the other hand, are only attained through manifestation (ẓuhūr) and self-disclosure (tajallī). The various kinds of blessings are likewise images of manifestation and self-disclosure.
