Qiyāma (resurrection) is the return to eternal life after death. This is divided into three types: The first is that, according to the state of the deceased in worldly (dunyā) life, after natural death, the person is sent to one of the higher or lower barzakh (intermediate realms). As the Messenger of God (peace be upon him) said: "As you live, so shall you die; as you die, so shall you be resurrected." This type of death is the minor qiyāma, as indicated by the hadith of the Messenger of God (peace be upon him): "Whoever dies, his qiyāma has come" (Daylamī, I, 285; ʿAjlūnī, II, 386), and by the isharat (subtle indication). The second is to be returned, through a voluntary death, to the eternal life of the heart in the sacred realm. As it has been said: "Die by your own will, so that you may live naturally." This type of death is the intermediate qiyāma, as indicated by the verse: "Is he who was dead and We gave him life and made for him a light by which to walk among the people..." (al-Anʿām 6:122).
The third is to be returned to true life while remaining with the Real (al-Ḥaqq) after having become annihilated (fanāʾ) in Allah. This is the great qiyāma. As stated in the verse: "But when the greatest qiyāma comes..." (al-Nāziʿāt 79:34) (Kāshānī, 146).
