Māʾ-yi quds (water of sanctity) is a knowledge that purifies the nafs (the lower self) from the stains of character and the filth of ignoble qualities, and is the true witnessing (mushāhada) that, through the manifestation of the Ancient One (al-Qadīm), removes hadath (the state of major or minor ritual impurity).
