What is the meaning of maghfirah (forgiveness) for our Prophet, who was given glad tidings of maghfirah by the prophets? The answer is as follows: Gafr means to cover. In this world, what remains hidden from the prophets is that they are the deputies (nuʿabāʾ) of our Prophet. In the Hereafter, this situation will be made manifest for them. For the Messenger of God (peace be upon him) said: 'On the Day of Resurrection, I am the master of the children of Adam.' There, he will intercede for those for whom intercession is appropriate. This is because his intercession for those suitable for intercession is necessitated by his status regarding intercession. Allah gave the prophets the glad tidings of a particular maghfirah, and He gave the Prophet the glad tidings of a universal maghfirah. It is certain that he is sinless, and there is no sin of his to be forgiven. The attribution of sin to him is not permanent, but only due to his being addressed (by such statements); and the purpose of this is his community (ummah). (Futūḥāt, II, 135)
