Blessing and affliction are for trial and tribulation. There is no fifth beyond these four. In each of these four, by the ruling of Allah's rubūbiyya (divine lordship), there is a right of ubūdiyya (servitude) that Allah will take from you.
In the matter of obedience, the right upon you is to witness the good that comes to you from Him. In the matter of maʿṣiyya (sin, disobedience), the right is that you make tawba (repentance) for the sins you have committed. In the matter of affliction, the right is that you show sabr (patient endurance) in the face of tribulations. In the matter of blessing, the right is that you show shukr (gratitude) for it. Understanding these lifts all these burdens from you.
When you realize that obedience belongs to you and necessitates mercy and goodness, you must show sabr in fulfilling them. When you know that persistence in sin and committing sin requires punishment even in the dunyā (this world), and that it extinguishes the light of iman (faith) in this world, this becomes a reason for you to abandon it. When you know that the fruit of sabr will return to you and its blessing will reach you, you hasten to it and trust in it. As for shukr, in accordance with the verse, "If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]" (Ibrāhīm 14:7), it is a means of seeking increase from Allah.
