The term me'a in Arabic does not necessarily imply that one of two things is mixed with the other. As in the following words of Allah: "Fear Allah and be with the truthful." "Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah; and those with him are severe against the disbelievers, and merciful among themselves." "And those who believed afterwards and emigrated and strove with you, they are of you." (al-Anfal 8:75)

The term me'a appears in the Qur'an in both specific and general senses. In these verses and in the verse of mujādala (argumentation), it is used in a general sense: "Do you not see that Allah knows whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth? There is no private conversation among three but that He is the fourth of them, nor among five but that He is the sixth of them, nor fewer than that nor more but that He is with them wherever they are. Then He will inform them of what they did on the Day of Resurrection. Indeed, Allah is, of all things, Knowing." (al-Mujādila 58:7) Begin speech with knowledge and end it with knowledge. For this reason, Ibn ʿAbbās, al-Daḥḥāk, Sufyān al-Thawrī, and Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal have said: He (Allah) is with them by His knowledge.

In the specific sense (meaning being on the side of someone), it is as in Allah's words: "Indeed, Allah is with those who have taqwa (God-consciousness) and those who are muḥsin (doers of good)." "Do not fear; indeed, I am with you both; I hear and I see." me'ālim-i aʿlāmi's-ṣifāt 629. When He was the second of two, when the disbelievers drove him (the Prophet) out (of Mecca), and they were in the cave, he said to his companion, "Do not grieve; indeed Allah is with us." That is, He is with the Prophet and Abū Bakr (not with the disbelievers); with Mūsā and Hārūn, not with Pharaoh; with Muhammad and his Companions, not with Abū Jahl and the others; and with the muḥsin who are muttakī (those with taqwa), not with the wrongdoers and transgressors. (al-Furqan 25:96)
