Maḥabbat-i aṣliyya (primordial love) is to love the essence itself not due to anything external, but for its own essence. For primordial love is the root of all loves. In this ḥāl (spiritual state), the love between two persons arises either from a connection between their essences, or from unity in attribute, rank, ḥāl, or action. (Kāshānī, 78; Jāmiʿ, 96)
