The melik-i rūḥ (the king called rūḥ, i.e., the spirit) and the melik-i nafs (the king called nafs, i.e., the lower self) are two enemies. In this village (the domain of the body), they mujādala (struggle) with each other. (Continuing his speech, he indicated with his blessed hand to his blessed form:) When the king of the rūḥ prevails, the village belongs to him. When the king of the nafs prevails, the village belongs to the king of the nafs. (Nafahāt, 69)
