Mizān (measure, balance) is the establishment of justice within oneself; as for the ṣirāṭ (path), it consists of striving to purify your akhlāq (character) and attributes. (Letāʾif, 134)

Mizān is that which leads a person to sound opinions, firm words, and beautiful actions; it is what distinguishes actions from their opposites (preventing contradictions in behavior). It is justice, which is the shadow of the single reality encompassing sharia (the sacred law), tariqa (a Sufi path/order), and ḥaqīqa (inner reality). Unless the maqāms (spiritual stations) of aḥadiyya (Divine Oneness) and jamʿ (union) are realized, even the ṣāḥib (possessor) of justice cannot realize it. The criterion for the people of the outward is sharia, for the people of the inward it is the intellect illuminated by the light of sanctity, for the khawāṣṣ (the elect) it is the knowledge of tariqa, and for the khawāṣṣ al-khawāṣṣ (the elect of the elect), it is only the divine justice that can be realized by the perfect human (insān al-kāmil). (Kāshānī, 93; Jāmiʿ, 101)
