The meaning of naqshband is to bind the naqsh (imprint), which is the form of true kamāl (perfection), to the qalb (the heart) of the murīd (aspirant, disciple).
The naqsh (imprint) is the form of the seal. When, by means of it, one seals wax or similar substances with the seal, and if the imprint remains fixed without being disturbed, the act of imprinting reaches the state of one who is perfect, and such a person is called naqshband. That is, it refers to the essential element of the imprint and that to which it is bound. (Bughya, 41)
