Nāmūs (law, chastity) is only completed through commands and prohibitions. Commands and prohibitions are only effective through waʿd and waʿīd (promise and threat / paradise and hell). Waʿd and waʿīd are only possible through targhīb and tarhīb (inducement to love and to fear). Targhīb and tarhīb only benefit those who possess khawf and rajāʾ (fear and hope). Khawf and rajāʾ become known and manifest at the moment of complying with commands and prohibitions. A person who fears nothing and desires nothing cannot be encouraged nor deterred by anything. Waʿd and waʿīd will be of no benefit to such a person. Whoever does not follow the lawgivers and does not avoid their prohibitions will have no share of nāmūs. (Ikhwān, IV, 77)
