Nāt refers to the act of describing (nātī: the one who describes) the actions, rulings, and akhlāq (character traits) of the one who is described (manʿūt). It is possible that nāt and waṣf (description) have the same meaning. However, waṣf is concise, while nāt is detailed. (Lumaʿ, 427)
Nāt, like awwal (the first), is that which seeks nisba (relation/connection). (Iṣṭilāḥ, 540)
