It is that which is present in consciousness. For one to know his own existence (wujūd, being), even if there is no witness to it in darkness, is the disappearance of that darkness. Do you not see the person upon whom the sun has risen, and whose eyes are dazzled as a result? Even if he does not see that he truly exists, he does not deny that the light of the stars still remains. The one who is annihilated (fanāʾ) is like this; when the witnessing of the Light of the Real (nūr of the Ḥaqq) prevails, he comprehends both the existence of the Real (al-Ḥaqq) and of creation (khalq). This is the path of the perfected prophets and the great ones who possess taqwa (God-consciousness). (Kavânin, 46)
