esrār-ı guyūb (Secrets of the Unseen)

The esrār-ı guyūb (secrets of the unseen) are divided into two categories: the manifest (ẓāhir) and the hidden (bāṭin). The manifest ones are known by the people of outward knowledge, provided they contemplate and investigate them. The hidden secrets, however, cannot be known by any zaman nazarla (theoretical knowledge). Knowing them depends solely on divine bestowal. This is the station of prophethood (nubuwwa) and sainthood (walāya). It is clear that these two are distinct from one another. For the prophet (nabī) is the one to be followed, while the walī (friend of God) follows him and derives illumination from his lamp. (Tadbīrāt, 208)
