By using it, it increases; the lights of his comprehension and understanding branch out and spread, and with the light of his comprehension, he deduces (brings forth) matters, comparing things he does not know to their analogues, to those that correspond, and to those whose meanings are close. To be a faqīh (one endowed with deep understanding) in religion is the nūr (divine light) that Allah places in the heart (qalb) of His believing servant (mu'min), so that he may see with it like a lamp. This nūr is not found in the disbeliever (kāfir) or the hypocrite (munāfiq). (Bayān, 77)
Fiqh and fahm (comprehension and understanding) are two names that bear the same meaning. The Arabs say faqih'tu in the sense of fahimt (I understood). Allah has preferred the fahm (understanding) bestowed by Himself over knowledge ('ilm) and hikma (wisdom), and has elevated understandings above judgments and rulings. (Kūt, I, 153)
