Knowledge (ʿilm) has mastery over the intellect (ʿaql). The intellect does not have mastery over knowledge... Knowledge is only beneficial with the intellect. The intellect is only beneficial with knowledge. (Ādāb, 23)
The spirit (rūḥ) is the source of goodness, and the nafs (the lower self) is the source of evil. The intellect is the army of the spirit, and desire (hawā) is the army of the nafs. Divine success (tawfīq, success granted by Allah towards goodness) is the helper of the spirit, and humiliation (khidhlān, the force inclining towards evil) is the helper of the nafs. The domain of both armies is the qalb (the heart). (Ādāb, 33)
