The baseness of the nafs (nafs—the lower self) arising from its inherent disposition, from the deficiency of perfections—see rezīletü'n-noksān—cannot be forcibly reformed.
However, baseness that emerges as a kind of strange affliction can be remedied, and for this reason, its punishment is not perpetual. (Ishārāt, IV, 28)
