Rutbat al-hālikīn (the rank of the destroyed); these are those who are destroyed because they have despaired of the mercy of Allah. This rank is that of the disbelievers, those who have become absorbed in the dunyā (the worldly life), and those who deny Allah, His Messenger, and His books. For, happiness in the Hereafter is only possible by drawing near to Allah and by being the object of His regard. This nearness can only be attained through maʿrifa (experiential knowledge of God) called iman (faith) and tasdīq (affirmation). Those who deny are called munkir (deniers), and those who belie are among the rutbat al-muʿazzabīn (the rank of the eternally punished), who have forever despaired of the mercy of Allah.
These are the ones who have denied the Lord of the worlds and His prophets; on the qiyāma (Day of Resurrection), there will certainly be veils between them and their Lord. Those who have a veil between themselves and the Beloved will inevitably suffer longing and yearning. (Iḥyāʾ, IV, 31)
