Rütbetü'l-mu'azzebin (the rank of those who will be punished); these are those who have attained the essence of iman (faith), but have been negligent in fulfilling its requirements. The essence of iman is tawhid (the oneness of God), and tawhid is to worship none but Allah. Whoever follows his own desires makes his desire his god. Such a person is not, in ḥaqīqa (inner reality), but only in his qalb (the heart), a muwahhid (one who affirms the oneness of God). (Iḥyāʾ, IV, 32)
