It is a treatment that is done to the one whom He has chosen and taken. If Allah returns him to His attribute, He has taken back what He gave and withdrawn what He bestowed. (Ta'arruf, 96)
The forms of fanāʾ (fanāʾ, annihilation in God) and other particular maqāms (maqām, spiritual stations) are different, but their ḥaqīqa (ḥaqīqa, inner reality) is one. For these are not the product of effort, but are attained through Allah's grace. The statement that the one who is effaced returns to his attributes is muḥāl (muḥāl, impossible). For to say that Allah has chosen a servant, taken him under His command, and then returned him to his attributes is muḥāl.
