The receiving of ʿiqāb (punishment) and sevāb (reward) by human beings is not because they have deserved them. Reward and punishment are the result of Allah's will, grace, and justice. For, due to a certain amount of sins, people do not receive an eternal punishment, nor do they attain an everlasting reward in return for a specific number of righteous deeds. (Taʿarruf, 28)
