Taʾwīl is the act of returning the outward forms of the sacred law (sharia) to their origin and proper meanings, and of uncovering realities beneath these forms. (Heyākil, 104)
Tafsir (Qur'anic exegesis) is a science concerned with the circumstances of the revelation of verses (āyāt), their contexts, narratives, and reasons for revelation. It is objectionable for those who are not qualified to express opinions or speak in this field, for it is necessary to know the relevant reports regarding these matters.
Taʾwīl, on the other hand, is to interpret verses (āyāt) in a manner consistent with the Book (Kitāb) and the Sunnah. Taʾwīl varies according to the purity of understanding, the level of knowledge, and the degree of nearness to Allah. (ʿAwārif, 20)
