And he said this in hope of the greatness of the reward... (Ri'âye, 24)
The absolute threat (mutlaq; absolute punishment) is for the disbelievers (kāfir), while the absolute promise (reward) is for the people of ihsan (muḥsin, those who excel in spiritual excellence). Some Sufis have said that avoiding major sins makes the forgiveness of minor sins absolutely obligatory. (Ta'arruf, 30)
It has come through the path of report (hadith) that, for a person, the establishment and realization of a promise regarding himself, and the establishment and realization of a threat, both depend upon the will of the Most Merciful (al-Raḥmān).
