Every knowledge that is abstracted from matter (mujarrad [abstracted]), and from anwār-i maʿānī (lights of meaning), is knowledge that has no relation to the body, to what pertains to the body, to conceptualization, or to form. We cannot know it through conceptualization. Rather, we think of it as it is, but according to our own state. However, unless the self (nafs) is transformed into light (nūr), it does not become illumination. If I am not at this level, I cannot obtain anything from this knowledge. (Futūḥāt, II, 478)
