It means that which gives. (Kāshānī, 38; Jāmiʿ, 78)
They are things that suddenly occur in the qalb (the heart) as a result of the strength of the moment, without the servant's effort, due to the intensity of the ḥāl (spiritual state) in which one finds oneself. This is what was previously mentioned as bawādiḥ. (Kāshānī, 46; Jāmiʿ, 105)
Bawādiḥ are things that come suddenly from the unseen to the qalb by way of justice, producing an effect of joy or sorrow.
Hawājim are things that suddenly occur in the qalb by the strength of the moment, without the servant's exertion. There are different types according to the strength or weakness of the incoming inspiration. There are those whom the hawājim carry away and turn about. There are those whose ḥāl (spiritual state) and strength are above the sudden occurrence. These are the bawādiḥ, the masters of the moment. (Rawḍa, 515)
