Wahm (delusion) is an attribute of the nafs (the lower self), a veil over the intellect, and that which covers the sun of the qalb (the heart). When the veils of wahm are lifted, the lights of the rank of ilhām (inspiration) are witnessed. Wahm displays your inniyya (sense of selfhood) together with the Truth (al-Ḥaqq); it makes you see the enumeration of the attribute of khalq (creation) as numerous. Wahm causes you to fall into despair; it makes you fear people. Wahm leads to confusion of mind. It prevents the attainment of perfection (kamāl). Wahm is removed only by clinging to the means of tanwīr (illumination, enlightenment) and by returning to what has been decreed. For the one who does as He wills and decrees as He wishes, wahm is eliminated through tawhid (the oneness of God). When the qalb is illuminated by fahm (understanding), the veil and wahm are lifted from it. (Kavânin, 92)
