He prepares blessings for them. Thus, they imagine that their aim can only be realized by abandoning their homeland, and that the Real (al-Ḥaqq) is outside of their homeland. (Futūḥāt, II, 516)
Exile (ghurba) is to become isolated by distancing oneself from familiar things. Its first subtlety is separation from one's homeland; its second subtlety is separation from a state, as in the case of the Truthful (al-Ṣiddīq, i.e., Abū Bakr) departing from among the hypocrites; its third subtlety is the exile of himma (spiritual aspiration). This is the exile of seeking the Real (al-Ḥaqq), and it is for the ʿārif (gnostic). (Rawḍa, 492)
