To conform to the sunnah (prophetic practice) in words and actions; to turn away from people in every matter, whether it be advancement or decline; to seek the riḍā (contentment with God's decree) of Allah in both little and much; to seek refuge in Allah in both hardship and ease.

The Shādhiliyya method consists of five principles: to have taqwa (God-consciousness) of Allah the Exalted, both secretly and openly, in every place; to conform to the sunnah in words and deeds; to turn away from people in every matter such as ikbāl (advancement) and idbār (decline); to seek the riḍā of Allah in both little and much; to seek refuge in Allah in both hardship and ease; to strengthen taqwa by means of warāʿ (scrupulousness) and istiqāma (uprightness); to reinforce the sunnah by preserving the sunnah; to have good akhlāq (character); to realize sabr (patient endurance) and tawakkul (reliance upon God); to realize riḍā through contentment and consigning affairs to Allah (tafwīḍ); to turn to Allah with praise and shukr (gratitude) in times of ease and to seek refuge in Him.
