These are matters such as abandoning objection, turning toward traversing the paths that lead to annihilation (fanāʾ), and crossing the perilous deserts of the spiritual journey. (Luma, 32)
The Sufiyya (the Sufis) are not those who have specialized in only one branch of knowledge, nor those who have assumed only a single spiritual station (maqām) or state (ḥāl). Rather, they are the source of all sciences, the locus of praiseworthy states (aḥwāl) and the noble character traits of the ancients. They are with Allah Most High in the matter of transitioning from one ḥāl to another, and are always exposed to more. For those whose states are so variable and who are in constant progression, it is not appropriate to refer to them by the name of only one of these states. For this reason, I did not ascribe to them only a single ḥāl or a single science. Because, if I had attributed to them only one ḥāl at each moment, the name I gave them would not have encompassed them completely in terms of ḥāl, akhlaq (character), knowledge, or action. In that case, I would have had to give them a different name at every moment.

Thus, since the state (ḥāl) in which they are always found (the garment they constantly wear) is not merely an outward attire, it is not sufficient to refer to them by this state alone.
