Junayd: The Sufi is like the earth. Everything bad is thrown upon him, yet nothing emerges from him except what is beautiful. He is like the ground: both the good and the bad tread upon him. He is like a cloud: he casts his shade over everything. He is like rain: he waters all things.
Nūrī: He is one who, when he does not find (what he seeks), remains in contentment and tranquility; when he does find, he prefers to give to others; he is intimately connected with samāʿ (spiritual audition) and religious music, and observes the commands and prohibitions (of the sharia).
Dūqqī: He is the one who occupies himself with the most appropriate task and keeps away from evil.
Kattānī: Outwardly, he is a servant (slave), but in reality, he is free.
Nahshabī: He is the person whom nothing can disturb, and through whom everything becomes clear.
